Dear My Sisters, Brothers, Nices, Nephews, Sons and Daughters,
We are all reeling from the recent events in Minnesota. We are reeling from the murders of George Lloyd in Minnesota, and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia, and Joel Acevedo and Dontre Hamilton in Milwaukee. We are reeling from centuries of racism and violence. We are reeling from red-lining, neglected communities, crumbling schools, and economic stagnation.
We are reeling. We hope every time is the last time. The idea of each time being the last time heightens our emotions - the sadness, anger, confusion, frustration - evermore. We exhaust ourselves emotionally every time.
And yet it's never the last time. We can't seem to stop demanding blood sacrifice for the generation of tomorrow to commemorate. With every heart-wrenching new example, it gets harder to imagine an end to Sexism, to Inequality, to every problem. We will never see a "last time," until we all believe that reforming the system and catastrophic change are not the same.
It is up to all of us whether this is the last time or not.
I am here to tell you that catastrophe is not necessary for change. We must believe our world can change, that our world can go on without violence. We must believe that complete, structural change in our society is not catastrophic; it is necessary for progress.
I won't tell you not to look away. We cannot go on fetishizing violence against Black bodies and we cannot forget. We mustn't normalize this violence. We shouldn't force Black bodies to bleed on camera in order to raise awareness and advocate for progress. It must still shock. All the while, I think about the words of Audre Lorde:
"Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation. And that is an act of political warfare."
Please, brothers and sisters, take care of yourselves. Take care of each other. I am sending all of my love to you. My faith is in God, and in the power of our community to rise.
If you are able, I need you to join me in action. Whenever you are able. We must work not just out of rage or frustration, but with consistent purpose. Action in countless forms is needed right now.
Educate yourself. We can ALL, ALWAYS, be better. Along the way, we must face our imperfections with compassion, not violence. Black people don't have to be perfect; Black emotions should have space to be felt and acknowledged. Each and every one of us is part of the broken system. It will take all of us to fix it.
Above all, we must not turn to violence as a short-cut or a solution. Violence begets more violence, and Lord knows we have had enough of that.
Together in peace and in love and in power, #WeRise.
.
Sincerely,
Rep.Sharon Beasley-Teague
